Only half the category actually posts you a book

The word print is used loosely across this category, and for a gift the difference is everything. Some tools mean they will manufacture a hardcover and post it to your address. Others mean they will give you a PDF and you can print it yourself.

The price on the pricing page is not the price at the door

Three different pricing shapes are in play, and they are not directly comparable.

Pay per book. Story Spark lists 29.99 USD for a storybook, 39.99 USD for a book and 29.99 USD for a comic book. Lullaby is 14.99 USD for a digital book and from 29.99 USD printed. These are the easiest to reason about for a one-off gift.

Buy credits, then print. LoveToRead sells credit packs at 9.99 USD for 100 and 19.99 USD for 225, with lifetime platform access, and prints a hardback for 24.99 USD including US shipping. If you only ever make one book, the credits are an extra step but the print price is the lowest published here.

Subscribe, then add print. ReadKidz starts free with no credit card, then 10 USD per month, or 9 USD billed annually. The printed hardcover is a separate add-on charged on top, with delivery time and cost shown before you pay. This shape is good value if you will make several books and poor value for exactly one.

Two tools do not publish a price at all. Imajinn does not list one on the pages we could read, and the Oscar Stories pricing page returned a 404 on 31 August 2026.

How late you can leave it

This is the question gift buyers actually have, and almost nobody answers it plainly.

Imajinn is the only tool here that publishes a delivery window: 7 to 14 business days. Treat that as representative of printed personalised books generally. Add the time you will spend writing and revising the story, and a printed gift wants two to three weeks of runway.

Inside that window, your realistic options are:

Personalisation depth varies more than price does

There are two very different things being sold under the same word.

Name-only personalisation swaps a name into a pre-written story. It is fast and cheap, and to a child it often reads as exactly what it is.

Photo-driven personalisation builds the main character from a picture of the actual child and holds that appearance consistent across every page. That is a different product from everything else on this page, and for some gifts it is the better one: the art is finished, the story has been read by thousands of families, and it arrives fast. Choose a template book when the child's name in a proven story is enough and the date is close.

Choose an AI-made book when the child should be the actual hero. The plot, the setting and what the character looks like are yours to shape, you can change a single page before it prints, and the digital copy stays with you after the printed one is wrapped. Language support is not disclosed, so it is a poor fit if the recipient does not read English.

Lullaby.ink — best photo likeness
