By the door sat one small parcel. “For Mr. Rowan,” said Mila. “We mustn't forget.”
One last gift. One snowy lane. Mila and Pip set off together.
A gust of wind tugged at the ribbon. The little paper star fluttered into the snow.
Pip found the star. Mila tied a new bow. “Together,” she said, “we'll keep it safe.”
At the end of the lane, one window glowed. Mila knocked softly. Tap, tap, tap.
“You came,” whispered Mr. Rowan. “Come in. There’s room for all of us.”
Inside were cocoa, carrots, and a chair pulled near. The smallest gift had brought the best company.
Mr. Rowan hung the paper star in his window. Now one more light shone along the snowy lane.
