Three little pigs found a sunny meadow. "A house of straw!" said Pip. "A house of wood!" said Poppy. Pearl set down a red brick. "I'll build mine slowly." They measured three little doorways, just the right size for pigs.
Pip finished first. Poppy added a bright wooden door. Pearl was still laying bricks. The others brought her lunch. "One row at a time," she said. At last, three little houses stood in the meadow.
One windy morning, a wolf came down the path. He puffed at Pip's straw house. The walls swished apart. Pip slipped through the back door and ran to Poppy. "Come in!" she called. They closed the wooden door together.
The wolf took a bigger breath. The wooden house creaked. A board came loose. Poppy took Pip's hand. Out they ran, across the meadow. Pearl saw them coming. "This way! There's room for both of you!"
Pearl shut the sturdy door. Outside, the wolf huffed. Inside, three pigs listened. The bricks did not wobble. The roof did not shake. Pip held Poppy's hand under the table. Pearl put three cups beside the warm teapot.
The wolf puffed until he had no puff left. He sat down, sneezed, and shook straw from his tail. Then he trudged away down the path. The pigs waited until the meadow was quiet. At last, Pearl opened the door.
"Could we build together?" asked Pip. "I'll measure," said Poppy. "I'll carry," said Pip. "And I'll show you the bricks," said Pearl. They worked side by side. The old wood became shelves. The straw became a wreath.
Their new home had three little rooms and one long table. Some days, building had been slow. Some days, asking for help had been hard. Now three bowls of soup stood together. Pip hung the wreath on the door. "Welcome home," he said.
