Nora stopped at the blue door. Inside, chairs scraped and children talked. Her hand tightened around Dad's. "Can we go home now?" she whispered. Dad crouched beside her. "This is a very new place."
Ms. Jo came to the doorway. "You can stay beside me," she said. "Would you like to find your hook first?" There were stars, boats, and one yellow sun. Nora pointed to the sun.
Nora hung up her cardigan. The little heart on her handkerchief peeked from her dress pocket. "After snack and garden time, I'll come back," Dad said. They hugged. They waved. Nora watched the door close. Ms. Jo stayed beside her.
In the block corner, a small house had no roof. Nora sat near the edge of the mat. A triangle lay beside her shoe. She picked it up. Eli looked at the house, then at Nora's hand.
Nora slid the triangle across the mat. "For the roof?" asked Eli. Nora nodded. Eli put it on top. Then he moved his blocks a little closer to himself. There was space on the mat for two.
They made a road with long blocks. Nora added a bend. Eli sent a little bus around it. "Beep, beep. Room for one more!" Nora pushed the bus back. A small laugh came out before she could catch it.
After snack, Nora's eyes filled again. "I miss Dad." "I hear you," said Ms. Jo. "You can miss him and sit here with me." Nora held her handkerchief. Through the window, she watched the garden leaves move.
After garden time, Dad was at the blue door. Nora ran into his arms. Then she turned to show him the sun hook. "And there's a place for me on the mat." Tomorrow might still feel new. But now Nora knew where to begin.
