The village sat at the edge of a wide, blocky meadow, where grass grew in flat green squares and trees stood in rectangular rows. Steve and Alex lived there, in a place they had built stone block by stone block.
Beside a square pond, a cobblestone path ended before it should have. Stacks of rough gray blocks waited nearby in neat rows, ready to be used.
Alex stood beside Steve, her square green eyes following the path into the dark. "When the moon comes up, I wonder if the stones would catch its light — if we curved the path just so."
Steve nodded his blocky square head slowly. "Let's try."
Alex stepped back and framed the curve with one hand. "A little more this way," she said. Steve shifted the block. "There."
One by one, they laid stones in a long, gentle curve around the pond. The blocks clicked into place with a satisfying sound, and the waiting pile grew smaller.
Then the moon rose, full and white, above the rectangular treetops.
Moonlight fell onto the new cobblestones. Each gray stone caught a piece of silver glow, and the curved path shimmered beside the dark mirror of the pond.
Alex stepped onto the first stone, then another. The path led her gently around the pond, each footstep lit just enough. Steve followed quietly behind.
At the far end, they looked back at the village, the pond, and the ribbon of moonlit cobblestone they had laid together. In place of the stacked blocks was something new.
