The late-afternoon sun stretched long and golden across the backyard. Bluey looked down and found the longest, stretchiest shadow she had ever seen. "Bingo! Come look!" she barked.
Bingo came bounding over. She stared at her own orange-and-cream shadow and gasped, "I'm enormous!"
Bluey made her giant shadow wave. Bingo waved back. Two enormous shadow sisters greeted each other across the lawn, and both tails wagged.
"Let's be animals!" Bluey pressed her paws together. Her shadow snapped like a crocodile. "SNAP!"
Bingo spread her paw-fingers wide. A spider shadow skittered up the fence. "Eeeek!" she squealed, then laughed at her own creation.
Bluey turned sideways. Her tall ears made two sharp points on the fence. "I look like a shadow-wolf!" she announced.
Bingo copied her, but her softer ear-shadows made little humps. Bluey studied them carefully. "You look like a bunny," she decided.
Bingo thumped one foot — thump, thump — exactly like a bunny. Both sisters collapsed laughing in the warm grass.
They lay on their backs and watched the light turn orange. Their shadows stretched all the way to the garden hedge.
"One more," said Bluey. She held out a paw. Bingo took it, and the two puppies stood close together on the lawn.
Their joined shadow looked almost like a heart. "That's us," said Bingo. "Yeah," said Bluey. "That's us."
A warm voice called them to dinner. The sisters gave their shadow heart one last look, then raced toward the bright doorway together.
