A very quiet birthday morning
It was Pip’s birthday morning, and the little house was very, very quiet. Pip pads down the stairs in his lopsided paper crown, ears perked, peeking left and right. “Hello? Anyone home?” No friends, no cake, no singing. His ears droop just a little.
那天早晨是皮普的生日，小小的房子裡非常、非常安靜。皮普戴著歪歪的紙皇冠，踮著腳走下樓梯，耳朵豎得高高的，左看看、右看看。「哈囉？有人在家嗎？」沒有朋友，沒有蛋糕，也沒有歌聲。他的耳朵微微垂了下來。
A paper star on the doormat
Then his nose twitches. A single folded paper star is sitting on the doormat, with a small arrow drawn on it. “Oh! A star! There’s an arrow on it!” Pip’s tail lifts. There is a trail to follow.
這時，他的鼻子動了動。一顆摺好的紙星星放在門墊上，上面畫著一個小箭頭。「喔！是一顆星星！上面有箭頭！」皮普的尾巴翹了起來。有一條線索可以跟著走。
Following the clues
The arrow points into the kitchen, where a ribbon bow waits on a chair. Then a crayon drawing pinned to the curtain. Then a trail of sprinkles along the windowsill. “A bow! And a drawing! Sprinkles, sprinkles, sprinkles!” Each clue brings him closer, and each one makes him giggle.
箭頭指向廚房，椅子上放著一個緞帶蝴蝶結。接著是別在窗簾上的蠟筆畫。再來是窗台上一串糖粉屑。「一個蝴蝶結！還有一張畫！糖粉屑、糖粉屑、糖粉屑！」每一個線索都讓他更靠近目的地，也讓他咯咯笑個不停。
Just Bram and an empty cake tin
Pip pushes open the sitting-room door — and finds only Bram, alone, holding an empty cake tin and looking flustered. “Pip! Hi! Hello! The cake is… still in the oven.” Pip’s smile wobbles for just one breath. Then the front door bangs open and a warm, sweet smell rolls through the room.
皮普推開客廳的門——只看見布蘭姆一個人，手裡拿著空蛋糕盒，神情有些慌張。「皮普！嗨！哈囉！蛋糕……還在烤箱裡。」皮普的笑容只搖晃了一小會兒。接著，前門砰地打開，一股溫暖香甜的氣味飄滿整個房間。
One candle, just like you wished
Willa rushes in with paint-smudged paws, carefully cradling a small iced cake with one unlit candle. “I’ve got it! One candle, just like you wished. You wished to help make it — so you get to place the candle!” “The clues were your part too,” says Bram. “We remembered, Pip!” Pip presses the candle right into the middle, the tiny flame is lit, and his friends sing. And Pip’s crown fit just perfectly — because this was the party he helped make too. He cuts the first slice for Bram, and the next for Willa.
薇拉帶著沾滿顏料的爪子衝進來，小心翼翼捧著一個裹著糖霜的小蛋糕，上面有一根還沒點燃的蠟燭。「我拿來了！一根蠟燭，就像你許的願。你希望能幫忙做蛋糕——所以蠟燭讓你來放！」布蘭姆說：「那些線索也是你的任務喔。我們記得，皮普！」皮普把蠟燭按進正中央，小小的火焰點亮了，朋友們開始唱歌。而皮普的皇冠戴起來剛剛好——因為這也是他一起辦成的派對。他先切了第一塊給布蘭姆，接著再切一塊給薇拉。
