In a valley of tall silver grass lived a young unicorn named Luna. Luna loved the daytime, when everything was bright and easy to see. But when night came, the dark made her tummy feel wobbly.

"I don't like the dark," Luna told her mother. "I can't see where anything is." Her mother nuzzled her softly. "Let's take a little walk, and I'll show you a secret about the dark."

They stepped out under the deep blue sky. At first Luna kept her eyes shut tight. But her mother said gently, "Open them slowly. The dark is not empty. It is full of quiet things."

Luna opened her eyes. High above, a thousand stars were blinking, like tiny friends waving hello. She had never seen them in the bright daytime.

"The stars only come out in the dark," said her mother. "If it were always bright, you would never meet them." Luna watched the stars, and felt a little braver.

Then Luna noticed something else. The tip of her own horn was glowing, a soft warm light, like a small moon she could carry with her wherever she went.

"That light was always inside you," her mother said. "It shines its best when the world goes quiet and dark." Luna lit the path ahead with her gentle glow, and the dark did not feel so wobbly anymore.

That night, Luna curled up in the silver grass. She let her horn glow softly beside her and watched the stars blink above. The dark was not something to fear, she understood. It was where the quiet, beautiful things lived. Goodnight, Luna. Goodnight.

For grown-ups

Luna and the Gentle Dark is written for children who feel uneasy at bedtime once the lights go down. Rather than telling a child there is 'nothing to be afraid of' (which rarely helps), the story gently reframes the dark as a place where good things — stars, a soft glow, quiet — can be found. If your child is scared of the dark, you can pause on pages 4 and 6 and look for your own 'stars' together: a nightlight, the moon through the window, a favorite glow toy. The unicorn's horn is a stand-in for the calm a child can learn to find inside themselves. Read it slowly with the lights already dimmed, so the story and the room match.
