Far up in the night sky lived a little star named Pip. Pip was the smallest star in the whole sky, and he was sure that meant he did not matter at all.

"The big stars are so bright," sighed Pip. "Nobody could ever notice a tiny light like mine." He tucked himself behind a cloud and tried not to be seen.

One night, far below, a little ship sailed across a wide, dark sea. The sailors looked up at the sky, searching for a light to guide them safely home.

The big stars shone brightly, but they were so high and so far away that the sailors could not tell one from another. They began to feel lost and afraid.

Then a young sailor pointed straight up. "Look! That small star, right there, is just above our harbor. Follow it!" She was pointing at Pip.

Pip could hardly believe it. He came out from behind his cloud and shone as hard as his little light could shine, straight down onto the dark water, showing the way.

The ship followed Pip's small, steady light all the way across the sea and safely into the harbor. The sailors cheered and waved up at him.

"I am only little," Pip whispered, "but my light was exactly the one they needed." From that night on, Pip never wished to be bigger. Even the smallest light, he knew, can help someone find their way. Goodnight, Pip. Goodnight.

For grown-ups

Pip, the Littlest Star is a bedtime story for any child who has ever felt too small, too young, or not important enough. Space is the perfect stage for this feeling — the sky is enormous, and Pip is tiny within it — which makes his discovery land gently: it is not size that matters, but being the right light at the right moment. After reading, you can point out to your child a time this week when something small they did mattered to someone. The story also works as a soft introduction to stars and night navigation for curious little ones. Read the last page slowly; the repeated 'Goodnight' is a natural cue to settle.
